New Hancock Rental Code Passed, then Paused

The City of Hancock has new rental property rules, although they won’t take effect right away.

At a four-hour meeting last night, the city council voted unanimously to adopt the ordinance that has been in the works for months. 

Last night’s discussion uncovered a couple of lingering issues.

The first is that no fee structure has yet been set. Mayor Paul LaBine said costs for property owners will go up…

“They’ll be more than the $5.00 they are currently, I can say that, but I certainly don’t see these fees being punitive in any way.”

Fees will be set soon by council resolution, and Labine promised they would be in line with those charged by others in the area.

The second concern is tenant parking, which is not specifically addressed in the ordinance. The planning commission has begun discussing a revision of the city’s parking ordinance, which will probably deal with that.

The third concern was unpaid, limited-term occupancy, such as house-sitting for homeowners who leave the area for an extended time. Council members felt that could be addressed through an amendment to the new ordinance.

To give the city time to address the lingering issues, implementation of the new ordinance was delayed from the customary 30 days until February 1st.
