New Houghton County Jail Proposal On Hold

Forward progress on a proposal for a new Houghton County jail and District Court facility will have to wait until spring.

Commissioner Roy Britz told the board last night that he has spoken with the owner of the land the county is eying, south of Sharon Avenue, off Evergreen Drive.

The owner has offered to work with the county regarding an option to purchase, which would secure the county’s position if voters pass a proposal.

Britz said the owner did emphasize that construction waste has been used to fill portions of the property.

U.P. Engineers and Architects can’t prepare a construction cost estimate until the potential expense of stabilizing the property can be assessed – and that can’t happen until the snow melts, and the ground thaws.

The delay could push the presentation of a ballot issue for a new jail back into 2021.
