New Trooper From UP Assigned To Calumet Post

The Michigan State Police Calumet Post has a new trooper from the Upper Peninsula.

Gwinn-native Nicholas Miller has joined the post after graduating from the 134th Trooper Recruit School on July 12th.

Trooper Miller will continue his law enforcement training and work with field training officers at the Calumet Post for the next 17 weeks.

He will spend time learning the area, familiarizing himself with the local court systems and law enforcement agencies, as well as sharpening his investigative skills under the supervision of a senior officer.

The 134th Trooper Recruit School began January 14th when 152 prospective troopers reported to the MSP Training Academy in Lansing . For 26 weeks, recruits received training in firearms, water safety, defensive tactics, patrol techniques, report writing, ethics, cultural diversity and implicit bias, first aid, criminal law, crime scene processing and precision driving.

In order to be selected to attend the academy, all applicants had to pass a stringent selection process that included a physical fitness test, background investigation and hiring interview.

As part of the department’s commitment to community outreach and service, the recruits volunteered at Angel House and the Lansing Rescue during their recruit training.

The Michigan State Police is actively recruiting for the next trooper recruit school scheduled to begin in September.  Interested candidates should visit www.michigan.gov/mspjobs for more information on how to apply.
