NMU to Establish Rural Health Center

Northern Michigan University will establish a new center dedicated to rural health services.

The Board of Trustees approved the move Friday.

The Northern Michigan Center for Rural Health will be affiliated with the Michigan Center for Rural Health. It will be based on campus, with some programs delivered using distance technology. Its goals are to improve health service across the Upper Peninsula, and identify academic programs that the university can develop to meet regional needs.

At its meeting Friday, the NMU Board also approved projects to design new academic programs in other disciplines, expand its cybersecurity program, and improve student retention.

Men’s and women’s Alpine skiing programs will be established, along with a competitive Esports program.

A new Master of Science in Nursing program will begin in the fall of 2021.

Steve Mitchell was elected chair of the board and Tami Seavoy vice chair.
