Officials Urge Snowmobile Caution

On the heels of a tragic week on the trails, state officials are reminding snowmobile drivers to follow some basic safety rules. The Department of Natural Resources’ “Ride Right” initiative was introduced last winter. It encourages drivers to…
– Ride within your limits.

 – Keep your machine maintained.
 – Ride sober and ride on the right side of the trail.
 – Stay on the trail and be careful not to trespass on private property.

Officials also remind snowmobilers to watch for hazards along the trails, including ice, downed trees and limbs, animals, and obstacles hidden under the snow.

The two deaths in the Upper Peninsula within the past week boosts the number of Michigan fatalities this winter to four.

Excessive speed plays a role in 80 percent of fatal snowmobile crashes in Michigan. It was noted as a factor in the death of 49-year-old Rodney Richardson, Jr., of Aurora, Illinois, near Lac La Belle on Sunday.
