Pelkie Man Arrested on Drug Charges

A Pelkie man has been arrested on charges that he has been importing drugs into Baraga County.

Detectives from the Upper Peninsula Substance Enforcement Team took the 55-year-old into custody Saturday at a traffic stop near Covington, while he was traveling back to the Copper Country from Milwaukee.

The arrest follows a year-long investigation, during which detectives say they were able make several undercover purchases of methamphetamine and cocaine.

At the time of the arrest, officers say a drug-sniffing dog located a box containing a quarter-pound of illegal drugs, including meth and cocaine, hidden in suspect’s vehicle’s engine compartment.

Detectives followed up with a search warrant at the suspect’s residence on Sarya Road in Pelkie. They seized 15 handguns, seven long guns and 2500 rounds of ammunition, along with digital scales, a money counter and other drug paraphernalia.

The suspect’s name will be released following his arraignment in 97th District Court in Baraga
County on one count of Possession with Intent to Deliver Methamphetamine and Cocaine. The case is being reviewed by the Baraga County Prosecutor’s office and investigators say additional charges are expected.

UPSET was assisted by the MSP–Hometown Security Team, the MSP-Calumet Post, the Baraga County Sheriff’s department, and Dynamite Towing.
