Portage Health Foundation Awards Grants

The Portage Health Foundation has announced that close to $80,000 in grants have been awarded to four organizations who answered the call, for proposals from the foundations Community Recreational Facilities and Resources Program, which was released this past January.

Executive Director Kevin Store, said the foundation was impressed with the proposals they received this year.

The grant committee spent considerable time reviewing all the proposals, but picked the four, which they felt would expand recreational opportunities and provide healthy activities for residents and visitors alike.

The grants went to the following organizations.

The Keweenaw Nordic Ski Club was awarded $20,000 to improve the Churning Rapids Trail System, along with the Lake Annie and Finni Creek Trails.

Keweenaw County’s Eagle River community was awarded $19,500 to begin a 2-acre park with walking and jogging trails, a pavilion, with a picnic table area and an area to run your dogs.

Chassell Township was granted $20,000 to improve and promote the Sturgeon River Canoe and Kayak Launch from Otter Lake to the new US 41 Access Site.

Calumet Township was awarded $20,000 to create a four-season outdoor recreation area, across from the Mine Street Station Shopping Center.

The area will be for all ages and physical abilities.

Other phases of the project will include tennis and basketball courts, an outdoor hockey rink and a bike rental station.
