Portage Health Foundation Awards Two Small Grants

[Hancock, MI] In recognition of the importance of small grants, the Portage Health Foundation (PHF) released a targeted call for proposal focusing on small grants. The intention of these grants was to support projects that will have an impact on community health and wellness while addressing the systemic health needs and risk factors of the broader community.

This call for proposals was designed to offer smaller levels of funding support to meet the needs of the community that focus on health-related events and/or activities that promote a healthy active lifestyle.

Two organizations were awarded monies from this RFP: the Baraga County Shelter Home (BCSH) and Keweenaw Family Resource Center (KFRC).

The BCSH received an $800.00 grant from the Portage Health Foundation. The BCSH project is a Teen Wellness Retreat that will be held in L’Anse focusing on providing education and skills to teens in the community to better cope with issues such as depression, stress, and anxiety.

The second recipient was KFRC who received a $1500.00 grant in support of their program Watch Me Grow which is a program that distributes valuable community resource materials and educational tools to parents of young children. Specifically, this grant supported the purchasing of the Brain Game Book which is a research-based book that helps with baby’s development and supports children from infancy to the age of three (3). This book is a valuable tool for new/young parents that need extra support with their kids’ development and learning.

Kevin Store, Executive Director of the Portage Health Foundation, said, “Often times small grants have as much of an impact for the people affected by them as some of the larger grants we have funded.  Our release of the small grant RFP this past spring was an effort to be more supportive of these needs…needs that too often are not fulfilled by other charitable resources within the community.”
