Portage Lake District Library Celebrates National Library Week

The Portage Lake District Library invites everyone to visit the library and celebrate National Library Week from April 9 – April 14.

Programs that will be offered throughout the week are as follows:

Monday, April 9
Baby and Me Storytime, 10:15 a.m.
The library is launching its first ever storytime for babies as part of its new “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” reading program. Baby and Me Storytime is for ages 0 – 18 months and a loving adult. Older siblings are welcome to join along for stories, fingerplays, songs, and socializing.

Downloading eBooks with Libby, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Participants will learn how to use a computer, smartphone, or tablet to download free eBooks and audiobooks using OverDrive’s new Libby app.

Wednesday, April 11
Storytime for Pre-Schoolers, 10:15 a.m.
Kids will make their own book after reading stories about libraries. This storytime is for children ages 2 – 5, and younger and older siblings may also attend.

Learn a New Language with Mango Languages, 1:00 – 2:00 p.m.
Participants will learn how to use the library’s online language learning resource, Mango Languages. Mango includes courses in over 70 different languages, including English.

Read-to-Me Dogs, 4:00 – 5:00 p.m.
Children can gain confidence and build reading skills by reading at their own pace to very loving, non-judgmental, and attentive listeners. These trained and registered therapy dogs are in the library every Wednesday from 4:00 – 5:00 p.m..

Travelogue: Africa, Part II, 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.
Mike and Susanna Ausema’s journey through the wilds of Africa continues in Part II with stories and pictures from Zambia, Malawi, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Thursday, April 12
Storytime for Pre-Schoolers, 10:15 a.m.
Kids will make their own book after reading stories about libraries. This storytime is for children ages 2 – 5, and younger and older siblings may also attend.

Library Card Design Contest Reception, 1:00 p.m.
Everyone is invited to enjoy refreshments and celebrate the winning quotes in the new library card design contest.

Friday, April 13
Author Visit and Book Talk with Daniel Wolff, 6:30 p.m.
Michigan Notable Book author Daniel Wolff will discuss his book, Grown-Up Anger: The Connected Mysteries of Bob Dylan, Woody Guthrie, and the Calumet Massacre of 1913. Wolff will be traveling with Michigan musician Chris Buhalis, who will perform some of the music referred to in the book.

Saturday, April 14
Building Adult Skills in Computing, 9:00 – 10:00 a.m.
Free, individual tutoring is provided by Michigan Tech Computer Science students and faculty for anyone who needs computer or digital device help. Participants can bring their own device or use the library’s public computers while MTU experts assist with any questions they may have.

Storytime for Pre-Schoolers, 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
This Storytime is provided by Houghton High School Key Club students. Children are invited for stories, a craft, and a really good time.

All Week
Fine Forgiveness
Donate nearly new books, DVDs or CDs and receive $1.00 in fine forgiveness per item donated during National Library Week.
