Regional COVID Numbers Still Climbing

The COVID-19 numbers in the western Upper Peninsula continue to soar.

Yesterday’s update from the Western Upper Peninsula Health Department includes 145 more confirmed cases, along with 23 more probable cases, since their last report was released late Thursday.

Houghton County recorded 53 new confirmed cases. Baraga and Gogebic Counties each added 34. Ontonagon County recorded 17. Keweenaw County, with a population of just over 2,000 people, added eight.

Five more COVID-19-related deaths were added, with two in Gogebic County, and one each in Houghton, Baraga and Ontonagon Counties.

100 more confirmed recoveries were also recorded.

More than 11,511 new cases were confirmed in Michigan Sunday and yesterday, with 65 deaths. While still very high, both of those totals are less than they were for the same period a week ago, offering hope that the state’s latest restrictions may be having a positive effect in slowing the pandemic down.
