Sawyer International Airport Gearing Up For The Snowy Season

If you have to fly in or out of Sawyer International Airport in Marquette County, there’s less chance that snow could delay your flight.

That’s because they’ve recently entered into a lease-purchase agreement for a multi-function snow broom/plow vehicle in order to clear the runway in a more timely and effective manner, while ensuring that air and cargo operations are able to take off and land.

Under the current federal regulations and updated runway condition reporting standards, maintaining the runway during winter operations requires significantly more airfield maintenance.

In an effort to reduce flight delays and cancellations, Sawyer International Airport is also testing the effects of de-icing chemical agents to further maintain a clear and safe runway.

Holiday Travel Tips
Holiday travel is a busy time at our airport. Keep in mind, Sawyer International Airport is governed by the
same regulations as large airports. Holiday travel tips to keep in mind for traveling:

  • Arrive at the airport two hours before your flight departure as airline systems shut down 30 minutes prior to
flight and cannot check in last-minute passengers.
  • Remember the airline agents and employees are there to help you, be kind and courteous with them, they
can be your best advocate if there are any issues with your travel plans.
  • Make sure you plan ahead and factor in extra time for road conditions.
  • Wait until you reach your destination to wrap gifts. If TSA needs to inspect your bag, they will be
unwrapped. Or better yet, ship your gifts ahead of time.
  • Remember the 3-1-1 rule. You are allowed 1 quart size bag with your carry-on, for liquids in containers less
than 3.4 oz. Check with TSA for medication rules.
  • Be prepared for the weather. And that means when you are returning home. Keep a snow brush and other
winter gear handy when you arrive back in the U.P.
  • Stay connected. Communicate with your airline for changes, delays, and other information during your travel.
  • Be sure to share your flight schedule and number with family or friends that will be picking you up or
expecting your arrival. This helps if they are waiting and wondering if your flight is on schedule.
  • Make sure you have copies of your passports or credit cards in case they get lost. Let your bank know you are
traveling. Make a hard copy list of your travel itinerary and contact for hotels, rentals, etc.
  • Take advantage of technology. There are aps for everything out there – your airline, car rentals, maps, hotels,
all at your fingertips. Don’t forget to keep your technology charged!
  • For those that don’t care for the technology, remember your local travel agency can book your vacation and
provide travel information. They are there if you need to change flights, get rerouted or other mishaps along
the way. How relaxing that can be when they take the stress from you.
  • Lastly, relax, enjoy, and wear a smile! It’s called vacation for a reason.
