Scam Alert–Caller Says They Need Bond Money

Local residents are being warned about a new scam where the caller claims to be a grandchild or relative and says that they are in jail.

The caller then sometimes hands the phone off to a second person claiming to be their attorney.

One of them will ask for bond money in order to be released from jail.

The Michigan State Police Calumet Post says these calls are not legitimate, even though they sound urgent.

Residents are advised to immediately hang up, do not give out personal information, and do not re-contact any number provided.

Troopers say they have been receiving a high volume of complaints from local residents regarding these scam calls.
