Shoppers Will Need To Wait For New Meijer

Houghton residents are being asked to be patient when it comes to potentially getting a new Meijer store.

Representatives from the company have met with the city manager and plan to do some soil borings on the proposed site.

The city of Houghton is working with Portage Township on some property issues, which have to be settled before Meijer will purchase the location in West Houghton.

No formal designs have been made but the store is expected to be a smaller version of what the company usually builds in larger markets.

With the amount of time needed to complete the planning stages, it will likely be 2020 or later before a store would open.
