St. Vincent’s Food Pantry Receives Easter Bounty

Hancock, Michigan–Contributions to food banks always swell during the winter holidays, but sometimes by the beginning of Spring the cupboards can be a bit bare. So this year Keweenaw Community Foundation (KCF) partnered with Tadych’s Econofoods of Houghton to help fill those cupboards at St. Vincent de Paul’s Food Pantry in Hancock.

Through a grant of $1,557.57 from KCF’s Food Initiative Fund, and an in-kind contribution of $500 from Tadych’s Econofoods, a total contribution of $2,057.57 worth of food was provided to the Resurrection Conference Food Pantry in time for Easter.

The food pantry has had many locations over the years but is now at 206 Quincy St. in Hancock, right next door to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shop.  “We’re happy to have this new space and very grateful to Keweenaw Community Foundation and Econofoods for their generous support,” said Tom Vichich of St. Vincent de Paul’s Resurrection Conference Food Pantry. From October 2016 through February 2017, the Pantry has provided 554 bags of groceries to 927 individuals.

“This was one of the moments when everything just came together. After hearing a radio interview about the new location for the food pantry, the staff at KCF realized this was the right fit for the monies we had available to address food needs in the Keweenaw. Making connections that help the community is one of the most important things we do as a community foundation,” explained Jim Vivian, Executive Director of KCF.
