State Creates New Mining Advisory Council

The State of Michigan will create a committee of industry experts to help guide development of the mining industry.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed House Bill 4227 into law yesterday, officially creating the Committee on Michigan’s Mining Future. Introduced by state Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) in February, the committee will make advisory legislative and policy recommendations to strengthen and develop sustainable mining practices in Michigan.

The bill received broad bipartisan support, passing unanimously in the Senate, and receiving only one “no” vote in the House.

The committee will be made up of 15 members appointed by the governor. It will include representatives of mining operators, state and local governments, environmental groups, Native American tribes, and organized labor.
