State Equalized Value Of Houghton County Rises

The Houghton County Board of Commissioners was told that evaluation in the county will increase just slightly in 2017.

At their April meeting Tuesday, Equalization director John Partanen said the increase in state equalized value will rise about one-tenth of one percent.

Partanen said some townships in the county may request reassessments this year.

That depends on actions by the state tax commission, however.

The board heard the audit report from Christina Smigowski of Rukkila, Negro & Associates. The report was approved.

County sheriff Brian McLean reported on the status of space at the jail, saying the jail was past capacity seven days this past month.

McLean emphasized that a solution to overcrowding at the jail is still needed.

Clerk Jennifer Lorenz was given the okay to use a state grant to purchase new voting machines.

Lorenz said the new machines will be much faster and more efficient.

Airport manager Dennis Hext reported there is a lot of speculation about possible federal cuts to local airports.

He emphasized the airport will remain open even if the cuts are implemented, but with fewer services.
