State Fire Marshal Issues Holiday Cautions

The holiday season can be joyful – and dangerous. It’s a peak time of the year for home fires.

State Fire Marshal Kevin Sehlmeyer warns that real Christmas trees can burn very quickly if they dry out and catch fire. He encourages homeowners to check their tree’s water supply every day, and keep flame sources well away.

Sehlmeyer also notes that the top three days in each year for home candle fires are Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. People often fall asleep or leave their home with unattended candles left burning.

Be extra careful with space heaters and extension cords.

Make sure your smoke detectors are working properly, and have a home fire escape plan in place that everyone in your household – even visitors – know how to use.
