State Reveals Marijuana License Process; Calumet

The slow process of permitting marijuana processing and sale for personal use in Michigan took another step forward yesterday.

The Marijuana Regulatory Agency released its process and rules for applying for adult-use marijuana licenses. The MRA will begin accepting applications November 1st.

Applications for a state license as a grower, processor, or a microbusiness must be accompanied by a $6,000 non-refundable fee. There will be a vetting process for the individual applicants and a review of  their business plan. For full details, click here

As the state regulations have fallen into place, local governments have begun to consider whether they’ll allow marijuana sales within their boundaries.

Houghton’s planning commission is beginning consideration of an ordinance.

Calumet is the closest to allowing sales. Village manager Caleb Katz says their ordinance is ready for final consideration by the council…

Katz says the ordinance could be passed within the next few weeks, and would take effect 45 days thereafter. Will it be the economic boon that proponents make it out to be?

But, with no track record to rely on, Katz says it’s impossible to quantify how much revenue the village will receive.

You can hear Todd VanDyke’s full conversation with Caleb Katz about marijuana, Calumet’s new effort to cut down on blight, and the status of the village police department on Sunday’s Copper Country Today.
