State Senate Considers Legalizing Stun Guns

The Michigan Senate is beginning its consideration of a bill that would repeal the state’s ban on electrical stun guns.

Stun guns differ from Tasers in that Tasers fire a projectile toward a target. Stun guns do not, and must be applied directly to the skin.

Tasers can be legally carried by anyone with a concealed pistol license. Stun guns are completely banned.

Proponents of the rollback say it would be safer for people to carry a stun gun than a handgun. Still, Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean thinks some basic education should be required…

On the whole, though, he’s not against the concept…

The bill passed the state House last week 84-24. All Republicans favored it, including Greg Markkanen of Hancock and Beau LaFave of Iron Mountain. The Democratic vote split 50-50, with Marquette’s Sara Cambensy voting in favor.

It will now be reviewed by the Senate Committee on Government Operations.
