Strawberry Festival Opens Today

The distinctive taste of the world’s best strawberries returns to Chassell this morning, as the 74th Copper Country Strawberry Festival gets underway. Strawberry shortcake made from locally-grown heritage berries will be served at the Centennial Park Pavilion from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. today, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. tomorrow. Brats, French fries and other treats will also be available.

One of the area’s largest craft and vendor fairs opens at 10 this morning, and continues tomorrow.

The annual fish boil starts at 4 this afternoon.

This evening, the children’s parade begins at 6 at the pavilion. Eight candidates are competing for the Strawberry Queen title in the pageant that begins at 7:00. They are:
• Amelia Laux from Houghton;
• Breigh Lawrence from Houghton;
• Emilee DeForge from Houghton;
• Sara Neva from Houghton;
• Micaela Geborkoff from Houghton;
• Tara Scullion from Houghton;
• Kamryn Sohlden from Chassell;
• Romy Kus from Marquette.

The Citizen of the Year and Youth Citizen of the Year will also be introduced tonight.

Tomorrow’s highlights include breakfast at the school from 7 until 10. The Strawberry Festival Parade begins at 11, and will be followed by a chicken barbecue and music from Lightning Ridge at the pavilion.

The Strawberry Festival is sponsored by the Chassell Lions Club, and serves as a fundraiser to support their community projects. Several other community groups also use the event to raise money.
