UP Health System – Portage Receives CMS 3-Star Rating

UP Health System-Portage front, summerAugust 4, 2016 – HANCOCK, MI – UP Health System – Portage announced that the hospital has received a 3-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). This rating means that UP Health System – Portage’s performance, as it relates to national standards of care and quality across 64 different indicators, is consistent with the performance of other hospitals in the Upper Peninsula and the nation.
The CMS unveiled its new, expanded Star Ratings program as part of its national push to increase healthcare transparency and help patients and their family members make informed decisions about their healthcare. CMS has been posting its quarterly Star Ratings via the web site Hospital Compare since April 16th, 2015.
The new Overall Hospital Quality Star Ratings summarizes existing data on CMS Hospital Compare in order to provide a rating of 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 stars, with 5 being the best possible rating. The data used to determine the star ratings includes mortality outcomes, safety outcomes, readmission outcomes, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging.
