US-41 paving, culvert project starts Monday

A paving and culvert project gets underway on Monday on US-41 in two locations in Houghton County.

The Michigan Department of Transportation is investing about $2 million to repair 5.3 miles of US-41 from south of 6th Street in Chassell to north of Denton Road and from east of Isle Royale Street to Bridge Street in the city of Houghton.

The project includes milling and resurfacing, pavement repairs, culvert replacement, concrete curb and gutter repairs, joint repairs, aggregate shoulders, minor drainage improvements, upgrading concrete sidewalk ramps to Americans with Disabilities Act standards, and pavement markings.

MDOT says this project will result in a smoother driving surface and increased safety, and will extend the lifespan of the roadway. ADA-compliant ramps make sidewalks safer for all users

The work will require single-lane closures. One alternating lane will be open via traffic regulators; temporary signals will be in place at the culvert locations.

Work is expected to be completed by October 11th.
