VA Holding Couples Retreat In Hancock

IRON MOUNTAIN – The Oscar G. Johnson VA Medical Center will be hosting a Warrior to Soul Mate Retreat for couples in Hancock on April 22-23, 2017.   Warrior to Soul Mate is a new program that provides hope and renewal to relationships impacted by military service, deployments, and war.  It is free of charge for both the Veteran and his or her significant other including hotel and meals.

“It provides a safe and healing environment for Veterans to renew and reconnect with their significant other through the teaching of productive communication skills,” said John Jamison, a VA Peer Support Specialist and one of the retreat facilitators.

According to Jamison, a retired Marine combat Veteran, there is clear evidence that healthy relationships decrease episodes of stress related illness, divorce, depression, suicide, abuse and neglect.

The retreat is specifically designed for couples who have been in a committed relationship for at least six months. Other pre-requisites are that one person must be a Veteran enrolled in VA health care and the couple has had no domestic abuse issues in the past six months.

Space is limited.  Veterans enrolled in VA health care who are interested in the retreat should ask their VA primary care or behavioral health provider to place a consult for the Warrior to Soul Mate program or contact VA Chaplain Herb Becker at (906) 774-3300, extension 32066 or Herbert.Becker@va.gov.
