Winter Activities Abound at Keweenaw National Historical Park

Snow, sunshine, and warm temperatures make for a great weekend of outdoor activities! Kick off your weekend on Friday, March 2 in Calumet, Michigan with the start of the annual CopperDog 150 race. Join other spectators at 7:00pm for the start of the 9th annual dogsled race in downtown Calumet. Fifth Street will be lined with spectators, race volunteers, and open businesses as everyone cheers on the dogs and mushers as they head through Calumet into the dark night.

If you’re in town before the start of the race, don’t forget to stop by the National Park Service visitor center near the race start on Fifth Street. Two floors of interpretive exhibits along with great views of downtown Calumet are available to all at no charge.

On Saturday, strap on some snowshoes for an hour-long snowshoe hike at the Quincy Mine Hoist Association. Meet behind the Quincy Mine Hoist Building at 2:00pm for this 1-mile hike about “The Life of a Miner and His Family at Quincy.” Please bring your own snowshoes and water as it’s predicted to be a warm day with plenty of sunshine.

Close out your weekend by visiting any one of the Keweenaw Heritage Sites that are open during the winter months or watching the dogs return from their race on Sunday morning. It’s a great weekend to be in the Copper Country!
