Winter Storm Brings Winds, Rain, Snow

Warmer-than-expected temperatures contributed to lower-than-expected snowfall totals during the first winter storm of the season.

On the Keweenaw Peninsula, most of the precipitation Monday fell as rain.

Inland areas, where temperatures were slightly cooler, were hardest hit. The National Weather Service reports that southern Baraga County received about six inches. Higher elevations in the Huron Mountains compiled as much as nine inches.

Heavy winds continue to cause problems. Numerous reports of trees blocking roadways have been received, and there have been some power outages. Officials remind you not to touch downed power lines, even if you think they’re dead.

Strong northerly winds are expected to continue today.
