Young Women Taking Part In Michigan Tech’s Sumer Youth Program This Week

Exceptional young women from throughout the country are on the campus of Michigan Tech this week to take part in two challenging scholarship programs.

Tech’s Summer Youth Program continues with Junior Women in Engineering and the inaugural Women in Automotive Engineering programs.

In Women in Automotive Engineering, High School girls experience the world of mechanical engineering while focusing on the impact automobiles have on society and the environment.

The young women will become familiar with what automotive engineers do and the different facets of a career in automotive engineering. Michigan Tech’s Mobile Lab serves as their learning space this week, as the students learn about test engines, electric machines and infotainment systems. Recipients of these highly-competitive scholarships receive tuition, room and board and supplies.

Junior Women in Engineering is geared for middle-school girls and provides an opportunity for academically talented young women to explore a variety of disciplines, including mechanical, electric, chemical, civil and environmental engineering.

The students are touring engineering labs, meeting and interacting with female leaders and role modes, and taking exciting trips throughout the Keweenaw.

This highly-competitive scholarship program allows students to spend time with other smart young women interested in computing, work in teams to complete engineering projects, design and build bridges, gliders and prosthetic legs and learn to purify water.
Girls will get a glimpse of college life by staying in residence halls, eating in a college cafeteria and exploring campus with like-minded young women.
