MDOT to Reduce Work for Holiday

MDOTTraveling through highway construction zones could be a little easier during the holiday weekend. The Michigan Department of Transportation will suspend work on most of its projects from 3:00 Friday afternoon until 6:00 Tuesday morning. That will mean fewer lane restrictions, and better traffic flow. There are some exceptions. Locally, the US-41 detour through downtown Hancock will remain in effect. The M-28 bridge over the Presque Isle River west of Lake Gogebic will have one lane of alternating traffic, controlled by a temporary signal. US-41 in Ishpeming will have one lane open in each direction with a traffic shift in the area where the new roundabout is being built. AAA Michigan estimates that more than 1.4-million motorists will travel 50 or more miles from home this weekend. That would mark the busiest Independence Day travel period in 13 years.
