Michigan Democrats Oppose GOP "Birthday Tax"

Michigan Democrats have started an online campaign to take aim at a proposed tax contained in the latest Republican-backed road funding package.

State Democratic Party Chair Brandon Dillon says the campaign targets what they call a new birthday tax, which raises vehicle registration fees by 40 percent. Birthday tax is in reference to when someone annually registers their vehicle with the state, which happens on their birthday.

House Democratic Leader Tim Greimel says the road funding package already hits the middle class with a $200 million increase in the gas tax. He wants corporations to pony up to fix the roads too.
Democrats have created a website, GOPBirthdayTax-dot-com, and are taking their show on the road to a handful of cities over the next couple of weeks.

A House-passed, $1.2 billion road funding plan currently awaits a vote in the Michigan Senate. That vote could come as soon as today (Tuesday).
