More Than A Dozen Snowmobilers Killed In The U.P. In 2016

So far in 2016 there have been 19 snowmobile related fatal crashes in Michigan.

Of these, 13 of them have occurred in the Upper Peninsula.

The leading causes of crashes involving snowmobiles include excess speed, alcohol impairment, driver inexperience, and poor judgment.

Troopers at the Michigan State Police Calumet Post are reminding snowmobilers of tips to help make a safer close to the 2016 season.

Operate only at a safe/reasonable speed
Do not drink and drive
Do not ride above your experience level
Pay attention to other machines
Avoid frozen bodies of water
Be careful at intersections
Avoid travelling on roadways
Wear appropriate clothing and protective equipment
Do not ride alone
Abide by laws
Use common sense

The Upper Peninsula has an expansive trail system used by enthusiasts from all over the country.

Though the snowmobile was originally developed to efficiently move people and supplies, it soon became a recreational winter sport.

Modern snowmobiles commonly weigh 600 lbs. or more and can travel at speeds in excess of 90 mph.
