MSU med School Students Will Soon Study at Hospitals in Cuba

20 medical school students from Michigan State University will walk the halls of hospitals in Havana, Cuba next year as part of a new program.

It’s the first of its kind for an American university and the once off-limits country.

Doctor Bill Cunningham, interim dean of MSU’s Institute of International Health, says they students will get firsthand experience dealing with tropical diseases like malaria or leprosy.

He also hopes students take away new tools to help them diagnose what’s wrong with a patient.

He says doctors in Cuba can’t just order an x-ray so they have to rely on a more hands-on approach to figuring out what’s wrong.

In fact, Cunningham says there are more MRI machines in Grand Rapids than there are in all of Cuba.

The first batch of students will make the trek to Cuba in April.
