New Boards Headed to Meadowbrook Arena

Meadowbrook Arena in L’Anse is a step closer to getting new hockey boards.

At last night’s village council meeting, trustees finalized their acceptance of a $255,855 bid from Becker Arena Products to install the new boards. Becker was the only company that applied. Much of the cost is being covered by a state grant. Members of the village crew have already torn out the old boards, and begun preparatory work.

Village Manager Bob LaFave said the timetable has been delayed a bit because of state red tape, but he’s still hopeful the work can be done by the time ice will need to be made in the fall.

This will be the first time that the facility will have new boards. Previous sets were purchased used.

LaFave also noted that work on the new Farmer’s Market stand in front of the arena is nearly complete. Electrical service was recently installed, concrete has been poured, and landscaping is being wrapped up. Farmer’s markets are held at the new facility Wednesday afternoons and Saturday mornings.

L’Anse Water Department leadman Lyle Olson reported that some of the village’s fire hydrants have deteriorated. Several have been removed, and several more repaired. Olson noted that pipes to the hydrants along US-41 have rusted because of the heavy use of road salt on the highway. State officials will be visiting soon to review that situation.
