Obituary: Virgil Clifford (Marcotte) Mongozid

Virgil Clifford (Marcotte) Mongozid, “Animikiins” (Little Thunder), age 18 of L’Anse, MI passed away on Sunday, September 25, 2022.

He was born November 10, 2003 in Hancock, MI son of Steven Marcotte and Charlotte Loonsfoot. Virgil graduated from Baraga High School in 2022 and was an outstanding athlete; playing football, basketball, shot put and pole vault in track, and running cross country. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, spearing fish, mud trucking with “Green Weeny”. He loved horses and spending time on the farm, and always wore his cowboy boots.

Virgil was very outgoing and was good with kids. He was a hard worker and was very talented. He worked as a custodian at Baraga High School for 3 years, did masonry, welding, and mechanical work, shoveled off roofs, worked at J & J Auto, Closner Construction, and was in the mechanic’s union. He was currently a freshman at NMU.

Surviving are his mother Charlotte Loonsfoot of L’Anse; siblings, Shauna Loonsfoot Pelto of L’Anse, Christian Pelto of L’Anse, Sean Spruce of Zeba, Adrian Loonsfoot of Sault Ste Marie, MI, Robert Mongozin of L’Anse, Ariana Marcotte of South Range, MI; Nieces and nephews, Niibi Paquin, Leo Paquin, Giizhik Paquin; grandmother Rhoda O’Brien Marcotte of Calumet, MI; great aunt Diane DeCota; uncles, Robert Marcotte, Ritchie Marcotte, David Harvey, Raymond Cadreaus, Virgil Loonsfoot Jr; aunts, Erica Marcotte, Billie Jo Harvey, Raquel Marcotte; cousins, Jessica-Rae Marcotte, Amanda Marcotte, Ryan Marcotte, Josh Marcotte and all cousins; all of his ancestors and friends and family who loved him.

Preceding him in death are his father Steven Marcotte; grandfather Virgil Loonsfoot; grandmother Marsha Parish; and aunt Shauna Calloway.

The visitation will begin on Wednesday, September 28th at 6:00 p.m. at the Ceremonial Room at The Ojibwa Seniors in Baraga. The traditional funeral services will be Thursday, September 29th at 10 a.m.. Burial will be in the Indian Pinery Cemetery following services. Jacobson Funeral Home is assisting the family.
