Open Carry Law Revisions

A state Senate committee late Tuesday approved, on a 4-to-1 vote, legislation that would make some changes to Michigan’s open carry laws.

The measure would allow people with the right permit to conceal carry in schools, as opposed to open carry.

Current state law doesn’t allow people to conceal carry in gun-free zones but it does allow them to open carry. The legislation basically flips that around.

Bill sponsor, State Senator Mike Green, says his legislation simply gives nearly a half million concealed weapons permit holders in Michigan more options.

However, opponents, mostly representing schools and churches, argued that the change would create even more potential dangers in gun-free zones.

The legislation now moves to the full Senate for action.
