Pat Coleman discusses results of public engagement session

Over 60 people participated at The Bonfire restaurant in late September, to begin to map out the future of Houghton’s downtown parking deck. Pat Coleman is an urban planner with over 40 years of experience, particularly for cold weather cities. He has worked with the municipality before on recreational plans, plus the drafting of the Master Plan. He says that the format used at the Night of Public Engagement was effective.

Not everybody’s comfortable standing in front of a large group, or walking up to a microphone and speaking, so working in small groups really makes it a lot easier to engage.

Coleman is still collating the results, but he says there are some themes emerging so far. The desire for more retail, perhaps mixed use, with housing options on upper levels was popular. Others stressed the need to add as much greenspace as possible. Coleman says both of those options will help the waterfront continue its transformation from its industrial origin.

It wasn’t a place where you took your children. Railroad grades, tracks, broken down wharves and docks, old warehouses.

Another session is tentatively set for early November, about a month away. Coleman will be a guest on Copper Country Today this Sunday.
