Phone Scam Threatens Disconnection Of Utilities

Some Upper Peninsula residents are being targeted by a phone scam threatening to cut their utilities.

Gladstone Public Safety Officers say a company calling itself the “City of Gladstone Disconnection Department” is calling city residents requesting credit card information.

The caller tells residents that their utilities will be disconnected if they do not provide the information.

If a call is returned to the number provided, the recording will announce that the caller has reached the “Disconnection Department” as well.

Police say several calls were placed to residents on Tuesday.

They warn that this is a scam and are reminding residents not to give out any personal or financial information over the phone.

According to police, the “Disconnection Department” is not associated with the city at all.

The City of Gladstone does not do disconnects or shut-offs over the phone.

Anyone receiving similar calls are asked to contact their local police department.
