Plea Deals Reached In Drug Cases

Two Houghton County women accused of trying to pass drugs to an inmate at the jail have agreed to a plea deal.

35-year-old Sarah McMahon of Laurium and 29-year-old Jamie Ekdahl of Calumet appeared in Houghton County Circuit Court Friday for their arraignments.

They pled guilty to Attempted Delivery of a Controlled Substance, punishable by up to three and a half years in prison.

But, according to their deal, any incarceration will be limited to time in the county jail and two other felonies were dismissed.

McMahon testified that on April 18th, she gave her prescription opioid medication to Ekdahl to give to the inmate outside of the courthouse while he was being escorted by a deputy from the Sheriff’s Department.

But Ekdahl said when she tried to hand them over, she accidentally dropped the drugs and they were discovered by the attending deputy.

Both Ekdahl and McMahon remain lodged in the Houghton County Jail.

They will be sentenced in four weeks.
