Possible Record Number Of Car Accidents In Houghton Over Two Days

Icy roads mean dangerous driving conditions.

That’s something the Houghton Police Department is urging motorists to remember.

At the regular meeting of the Houghton City Council, Police Chief John Donnelly said they have seen a possible record number of accidents in the last couple of days.

There have been 28 accidents just in the city of Houghton alone.

City Manager Eric Waara said there have been numerous calls to the city to put more sand on the roads, but with the cold and windy weather conditions, the sand is simply being blown off the road,

Temperatures need to approach 20 degrees before the sand and salt mixture becomes effective.

Until then, motorists are urged to slow down and choose alternative routes that are not as steep or, if possible, stay off the roads until conditions improve.
