Property Seizure Laws Addressed

Legislation making it more difficult for police to seize property from people suspected of criminal activity is headed to the Michigan House.

The bills to reform the state’s Civil Asset Forfeiture law would increase the amount of evidence police need before a seizure could happen and require more detailed reporting regarding forfeited property.

Supporters of the legislation say Michigan citizens have had property taken by police and not returned, even though they have not been convicted of a crime.

Michigan State Police say the practice is critical in the process to stop drug trafficking.
