Reforms of MI Civil Asset Forfeiture Laws Head to Governor

Bills to reform the laws that allow police to seize property in Michigan are headed to the governor, after passing the Michigan Senate Wednesday.

The bill package would change the state’s civil asset forfeiture laws by increasing reporting standards and increase evidentiary standards for law enforcement to seize property.

State Senator Rick Jones, a former Eaton County Sheriff, says he thinks there have been occasions across the state where things were inappropriately seized.

He says the state needs to guard against that.

But opponents of the change say it’s a back end solution.

They say more should be done on the front end by better training officers to know when to seize property.
