Report Shows Correlation Between Falls & Crashes

A new AAA report says that older drivers with a history of falling are 40 percent more likely to be involved in crashes than their peers.

The study from the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety says falls limit an older drivers’ ability to function behind the wheel and can make driving risky for themselves and others on the road.

That’s important, the study says, because each year 12 million older adults will experience a fall.

It says a loss of functional ability can result from falls, and that can be dangerous if the elderly person is behind the wheel of a car.

In addition, falls create a fear of falling.

That’s followed by less physical activity and then a weakening of driving skills.
