Republicans React To Obama's State Of The Union Speech

President Barack Obama is pushing against the political rhetoric that’s been heard on the campaign trail.

In his State of the Union address Tuesday, he said any politics that targets people based on race or religion should be rejected.

Obama said politicians who insult Muslims aren’t making the world safer.

He said such talk betrays who we are as a country.

He also called for an end to the “tribalism” which he says has permeated the political campaigns this year.

Republicans were not impressed.

Following President Obama’s final State of the Union, Rep. Dan Benishek released the following statement:

“Tonight what we heard from the President was more of the same – failed ideas and an unwillingness to address the threats to our nation. Despite clear evidence that influence of ISIS is growing, we still have no plan to defeat them. Instead, the President continues to focus on a failed agenda that attacks our Second Amendment rights and weakens our standing in the global economy. In Congress, we plan to move forward with the priorities of the American people by doing everything in our power to keep our nation secure and to grow our economy from the ground up.”

Detroit native and presidential hopeful Ben Carson says the president should talk less about global warming and more about Isis.

Michigan Republican Party Chairman Ronna Romney McDaniel said the president “spent much of his speech avoiding pressing national security issues.”

Republican Congressman John Moolenaar said “Americans believe our country is on the wrong track.”

And Congressman Mike Bishop said the president isn’t concerned about helping families.
