Retired Generals Tout Early Learning

71 percent of all young adults in Michigan and nationwide are not able to join the military because of a lack of education, and other reasons.

That’s according to two retired Generals who spoke in Lansing on Tuesday.

Major General Gerald Miller of the US Army, (Retired), says a lack of education reduces the percentage of young people who can qualify for the military and other problems like obesity and drug convictions also play a role.

Former Michigan Adjutant General Thomas Cutler is urging state lawmakers and Congress to resist cuts in early learning programs as well as Preschool Development Grants.

He says there’s new evidence that early learning programs can also help reduce America’s obesity problem.
