Schuette Fights Subpoena Attack, Denies Misuse of Office

Bill Schuette

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bill Schuette, members of his staff, and his political allies have been hit with a slew of subpoenas alleging that he has used his office as Michigan Attorney General to promote his personal political interests. The Detroit News reports that the group Project Michigan sent out more than three dozen demands for documents and other records last week. Project Michigan alleges that Schuette’s staff members used official email addresses for political purposes, and engaged in political activities while on the job. Schuette denies the claims, and has filed for a court order to quash the subpoenas. However, emails uncovered by the Detroit Free Press indicate at least one occasion in 2015 when Schuette requested that staffers join a mid-afternoon conference call to discuss presidential politics. At the time, Schuette was actively campaigning for Jeb Bush. He has since thrown his support to Donald Trump, and carries the president’s endorsement in the upcoming primary against Lieutenant Governor Brian Calley, Patrick Colbeck, and Jim Hines.
