Senate Passes Bill to Curb Prescription Drug Overdoses Among Youths

Preventing teenage prescription drug overdoses is the goal of a bill signed into law by the governor Wednesday.

The legislation would exempt those under 21 from criminal penalties when trying to get medical help for themselves or another person for a prescription drug overdose.

Supporters say the current law serves as a deterrent keeping young people from seeking help because they fear repercussions.

But exempting them from the penalties could help prevent overdoses and save lives.

The legislation is similar to an existing law that provides immunity to minors who report an alcohol-related medical emergency.
