Should Public Universities be Required to Hold Public Meetings?

A proposal requiring university boards to hold open meetings is being weighed by lawmakers in the Michigan House.

The joint resolution is sponsored by State Representative Martin Howrylak.

If approved by both the House and Senate a question would be placed on the November ballot asking voters to update the state’s constitution requiring public universities hold public meetings.

Public universities were required to hold open meetings until the Michigan Supreme Court ruled, in 1999, they don’t have too.

Howrylak says if those universities want state money then they should hold open meetings.
