Snyder Backs Phosphorus Runoff Reduction In Lake Erie

Governor Rick Snyder is backing an effort to reduce phosphorous and other nutrient runoff into Lake Erie.

The Governor was speaking at the opening of this year’s Leadership Summit of the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence Governors and Premiers over the weekend.

The runoffs are considered fuel for harmful algal blooms similar to one that occurred in Lake Erie last year.

Many are calling for a 40 percent reduction in runoff. The Governor cited the 2014 algae bloom when he said cutting the runoff is “a goal we need to have. I think it’s an achievable goal.”
