Governor Rick Snyder has said no to the idea of college athletes unionizing. The governor Tuesday signed a bill into law that bans student-athletes at state public universities from forming or joining a union. The measure had passed both the house and senate mostly on party-line votes, as Republicans mostly support the bill and Democrats mostly oppose it. The new state law follows Chicago National Labor Relations Board approval of a petition filed by Northwestern University athletes, who argued they were employees of their school, and thus could join a union. The Northwestern players also voted on certifying their union, but results of the vote have not been disclosed.
