Speed Limits Would go up Under Bills Being Debated in a House Committee

You could drive faster on Michigan’s roads under a series of bills debated in a Michigan House committee Tuesday.

State Representative Bradford Jacobsen is sponsoring some of the bills and says the speed limit for cars on some interstates would go up to 80 miles an hour and 65 miles an hour on other roads.

Semis could drive as fast as 70 miles an hour on some interstates too.

He says most people are driving five miles an hour or six miles an hour over the speed limit now and there haven’t more car crashes to go along with the increased speed.

Jacobsen says both speak to a need to increase the speed limit.

The series of bills were not voted on during the hearing. In fact, other hearings are expected before lawmakers vote on the measures.
