State Capitol Looking to Update Security System

Security cameras at the Michigan State Capitol would be less obvious, under plans discussed by the State Capitol Commission.

John Truscott, vice chair of the commission, says they’re looking at updating to cameras that can better tilt, scan and zoom and tie into the camera system in downtown Lansing.

He also says the cameras on the exterior of the building aren’t very attractive, so they want cameras that better integrate with the look and feel of the building and don’t protrude as much.

Truscott says a recent demonstration where the Capitol exterior was vandalized, highlighted the need for a new system.

Not part of the commission’s discussions were adding metal detectors at entrances.

Truscott says while they want a secure building, they don’t want to put up barricades making the Capitol less accessible to the public.
