Budget Deadlock Continues

There’s been no breakthrough in Michigan’s budget stalemate.

With 13 days to go before the end of the fiscal year, Republicans in the State House and Senate pushed forward their budget bills yesterday.

Party leaders say they have had no direct communication with Governor Gretchen Whitmer, and hope to have their bills ready to send to her next week. At that point, Whitmer can approve them, veto them in full, or veto specific line items.

The bone of contention continues to be roads. Republicans want to redirect a half-billion dollars from the general fund to help in the road repair effort. Whitmer says road money should come from new revenue.

It’s still not clear which programs Republicans will cut to free up that cash.
